Today, we are going to discuss 3 visible signs showing that it’s time to change jobs. I know it’s very sensitive to talk about job switching during the Covid-19 pandemic. However, because most of us are working from home, I think we will have more time and space to carefully consider our current occupations. If there are problems with your career, then you can probably fix that immediately. Or you can plan to find another job after the quarantine period.
Okay, let’s begin with the first sign!
Lose motivation
The first sign proving it’s time to change jobs is the lost motivation at work. If you’ve already satisfied with all the objective elements such as work environment, colleagues, the scope of work, and salary, but you still find no motivation and mood when working.
Perhaps, you feel exhausted going to the workplace every day or you cannot study new things and improve yourself in the current position. All of these may be the visible signs to show that you are having issues with your jobs and it’s time for something new in your career path.
You have to consider your current work if you lose motivation for it
In this case, there are two ways to refresh your work and yourself:
- Seek a new opportunity in your current company: You can ask your manager for a meeting to discuss your problem. Then you can apply for a new position in your team or in the company. Maybe you can try new jobs within the company or you can get a promotion to a higher position. Based on your abilities, your manager will have further discussion with the HR team to decide which position will be good for you. By switching from one to another position in the company, you will have a chance to experience new challenges, learn new things, and refresh your working mood.
- Find a brand new job: If the first solution is not for you, then it’s time to change jobs but not in the same workplace. This is a very good way to refresh your career completely from colleagues, environment, the scope of work, and perhaps you have a chance to get a better salary as well. However, changing jobs also has risks, so please be careful and do it in secret.
Clear enough!? Let’s proceed to the second sign to change jobs.
Unhealthy working environment
Indeed, the working environment plays a very important role. It is even more fundamental than the challenges in work or salary. Therefore, if you are in an unhealthy working environment, then it’s probably time to change jobs.
One question remains, what makes a ‘toxic’ workplace? There are countless elements that make your work environment unhealthy. Perhaps, your colleagues are mean and lazy, and they often push burdens on your shoulders. Or even worse, they take advantage of you? Moreover, your boss may be mean as well, he or she is often so harsh on you? And more negative things like that.
A bad work environment will make people change jobs easily
I guess all of you already have your own definitions of an unhealthy workplace.
For me, if I feel too stressed and dissatisfied but the reason is not the rightful pressure from my work, then it must be from my unhealthy work environment including my colleagues, my boss, or else.
Alright, if you are in a toxic environment, then you probably should talk to your boss and colleagues first in order to resolve the workplace conflicts first. After straightforward discussion, if your problems still remain there, you can start to find a healthier work environment and plan for changing jobs. Unhappy with your current salary
It’s okay because you are not alone. This is also a sign showing that it’s time to change jobs. Perhaps salary is a very sensitive topic to discuss, however, it is a decisive factor that makes thousands of people quit their jobs and apply for new ones every year.
You might think your current salary is low and under-expectation in comparison with your responsibilities. Before job hopping, you can find a good opportunity to negotiate with your company for a better salary. To do that successfully, you’d better prepare a detailed report on your scope of work. “Actions speak louder than words”. After listening to your presentation and taking your report as a reference, your direct manager and also the company will have proper consideration to give you the most suitable salary.
In case you still are not satisfied with the company’s decision, then we can plan to change your job. As we already mentioned, you should do it in silence.
In short, if you have these 3 signs, you really have to consider if it is time to change jobs or not. However, it does not mean that whenever you have some problems with your current work, then you decide to quit. Try to negotiate and solve problems first before job-hopping, okay!? Good luck!
