Are you having trouble staying motivated at work? A yes is understandable because lost motivation at work is a common problem that most adults encounter nowadays, especially when working at home. Perhaps you don’t know that losing motivation for work is one of the primary signs it’s time to change jobs.
But do not panic yet, because that’s not the main topic we are going to debate today. In this article, we are going to dive deep into the 4 reasons why you lose motivation at work no matter if you are working at the office or at home.
Let’s wait no more, and jump right into the first one!
Reasons for lost motivation at work
Here come the reasons why you find no work motivation left anymore. Moreover, I am going to suggest to you some proper solutions for each reason too. Alright, let’s see what are your reasons?
Your willpower and mood has been drained out
Willpower and working mood are two primary factors that help you accomplish your tasks efficiently. Hence, one of the main reasons for lost motivation at work is your low willpower. In another word, your working motivation and mood have run out already.
This reason often happens when you have worked in a position or a company for too long. You have been through a lot of difficulties, overcame so many challenges, gained all the achievements you could in the current job, met all the people you should meet, and learned as well as developed yourself enough. Or at least, that’s what you thought. Otherwise, a lot of senior staff find their jobs too stable and easy to handle, so they are not interested like they used to feel. On the other hand, some people admitted that their salaries are not as they expected, and this decreases their willpower for work.
Lack of willpower and working mood cause lost motivation at work
Then, this is the period when people feel a bit burnt out and lacking motivation. Or we can say your current job does not reproduce the willpower and stimulate your working mood anymore. Eventually, you find no motivation for work, and that’s totally understandable.
To regain the motivation for work in this situation, you should try to refresh your work in two ways:
- Change your position at the current company: Look like you have been fed up with doing the same ‘damn’ things every day, you need something new. However, you are not ready to get out of the safe zone and start a new job, then you should try to renew your role at the current company. Find and try to apply for a new position at the current company or approach your manager for a promotion proposal. If salary is your problem, discuss and ask for a salary raise.
- Quit your current job and find a new one: In case your current company is the cause for your lost motivation at work, hesitate no more and seek new challenges in a brand new workplace.
You don’t feel valued enough
Most senior employees may feel underrated by their current managers or companies after a long time sticking to one workplace. They feel that their efforts and contributions are not recognized and rightfully valued. Maybe, the misevaluation about people’s performance and abilities come from the low salaries, roles in a team, or many other things. This seems to be irrelevant but it actually associates with lost motivation at work.
If your boss does not appreciate your accomplishments and efforts, fine but you should not take it personally. Instead of being disappointed and losing motivation for work, you should continue to do your job well and find other ways to reward yourself. For example, after handling a huge workload, you can go out with your friends for a dinner to release stress and relax. This method won’t make your boss valued your efforts more, but it helps you recover your energy for work.
If one’s values are not appreciated properly, lost motivation at work is unavoidable
The second measure you can consider to fix this problem is straightforward discussion. Yes, you heard that. If your boss does not appreciate you and your accomplishments right, then schedule a one-on-one meeting and talk to him/her. Tell him/her how you feel and what your problem is. An open discussion will help you both speak with one voice and somehow figure out a proper solution. Once your problem is solved, you will get back the motivation for work.
If the two methods above won’t work for you, you should find motivation in a new job and somewhere else where your abilities and efforts will be valued better.
You are poisonous by the working environment
No other way can cause lost motivation at work faster than an ‘unhealthy work environment’. The definition of a ‘poisonous’ working environment varies for different people, but all have one thing in common: it drains your motivation quickly and easily by workplace conflicts.
Obviously, a toxic workplace leads to lost motivation at work
To me, multiple things are shaping a toxic work environment:
- Your boss: For example, he/she does not recognize, appreciate or care about your efforts. He/she is stubborn, conservative, unable to work with, etc.
- Your colleagues: Your co-workers are irresponsible, hard to work with, mean, talkative, lazy, toxic, etc.
- Unprofessional working procedure: The workflow and duties are unclear and messy, which causes you a lot of troubles and burdens.
- Miscommunication: You and your colleagues do not get along well, so you are unable to cooperate with them.
- Etc.
I believe each of you will have your own definition of an unhealthy work environment. Admit it! It makes you lose motivation for work considerably. There are only two methods to improve the situation: Try to solve the problems at the current workplace or find a new company to work for.
You are exhausted!
Maybe, your lost motivation at work does not have anything related to your workplace, your boss, or colleagues. Simply, you are already exhausted after a long time sticking to the same workplace, the same boss, and the same colleagues.
Your lost motivation at work is simply a signal that you are tired of this job
If this is the reason for your problem, then you should probably rest for a while. You can take a short vacation to refresh your mood and willpower, or you can change the work environment to find the source of motivation.
